Room 9's Suter Trip was amazing

The exhibition called Tamatea is a celebration of art and conservation in Dusky Sound.  In the deep south, Dusky Sound is one of New Zealand's most precious, remote areas and DOC has a vision for it to become one of the most intact ecosystems on Earth.

26 artists were invited to discover Tamatea for themselves and, through art, connect people with this special area.  Room 9 students enjoyed making a visual diary, sketching things they saw in this artwork.

Esther took the students through the printmaking process in the Suter Art Gallery's classroom.   There, the children created art representing the wonderful places we need to protect.  Thank you to all the parents who came along to help us on this trip.  Check out our video and remember, the Suter is "our place" so visit it when you get a chance over the weekend.

Enviro Agents' initiative - Bees Wax Lunch Wraps

Today, Room 9 was a 'hive' of activity for Fun Day Friday!

We had some wonderful parents give up their time to help each of the students make their very own lunch wrap.

We followed a simple procedure - cutting out our chosen material before sprinkling it with bees wax and then melting the bees wax by ironing the material between greeseproof paper.  We can't wait to use them in our school lunches to keep our food and environment safe.

Thank you to the parents who came to help, especially Andrea, Naomi and Helen who are running these sessions throughout the school this term.

Science theme for fun day Friday

Last Friday Room 9 carried out some science experiments.  We observed "mooving milk" and "walking water".  

Our walking water predictions were proved correct when the kitchen paper absorbed the primary coloured water and mixed together to make secondary colours.  We found it interesting that the level of water went down in the original cups and every cup ended up holding about the same amount of water.

We were fascinated with the beautiful patterns that were created when we dropped a little bit of washing up liquid into a bowl of milk.  We were left wondering what it was in the washing up liquid that could make the milk do that.

We believe Room 9 students have very inquisitive minds!
